A year before the great Chicago Fire of 1871, a group of Norwegian immigrants founded the Normennenes Singing Society.
Its purpose was to uphold Norwegian male chorus traditions and to promote social, cultrural and intellectual intercourse among its members. Normennenes Singing Society is one of the oldest male choruses in America. Throughout its 100 plus years of continuous operation it has had numerous locations from which to serve its membership. Among these have been Wicker Park, Logan Square, Arlington Heights and presently the facilities of the Estonian House in Riverwoods. The Society has hosted several Norwegian Singers Association of America conventions and has had several tours to Norway. Some of these were in the years 1924, 1938, 1952 and 1964. Another tour could be possible in the future. Norwegian ancestry is not necessary for membership. In 1870 the chorus began with 28 singers. For the 50th anniversary we had 95 singers and 300 social members. We are continuously seeking new members. New members will ensure the preservation of old traditions that were established October 30th, 1870. If you are not already a member, please join us, sing with us, become a part of us.
